Pretzel Mummy Dogs

No shade to the hot dogs wrapped in crescent dough, but hot dogs wrapped in PRETZEL DOUGH are just next level!
Serve them with tots and dip them in your favorite sauce!

Pretzel Mummy Dogs are easy to make using pre-made pizza dough. I recommend Trader Joe’s pizza dough.  Their pre-made dough can be found in the refrigerated section and freezes really well so we always have some on hand. It comes in 1 pound portions which made 8 mummy dogs. Feel free to sub with your favorite pizza dough, homemade or store-bought.

It’s also important to make sure your dogs are fully wrapped in dough. You’ll be rolling your dough into ‘snakes’ and then wrapping them around the dog, leaving an opening towards the top to reveal their eyes. It’s important that the dough you use for the top of their heads is connected to their body wrap (on the back is fine). If your dough doesn’t connect, your mummy will unravel during the pretzel process! So just pinch the dough together to keep them all wrapped nice and tight.

THE PRETZEL BATH

Once your mummies are all all wrapped up, they need to go for a quick swim in a pretzel bath before they are baked in the oven. Add 2/3 cup of baking soda to approximately 10 cups of water and bring to a rolling boil.  Add your dogs, 2 at a time, to the pretzel bath for about 30 seconds. Remove with tongs and place on a parchment lined baking sheet.

The pretzel bath is a critical step in transforming pizza dough into a pretzel. The alkaline water bath gives the pretzel it’s crispy crust and chewy inside as well as provides the pretzel flavor. Do not skip this step!

FINISHING TOUCHES

Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with salt (kosher is great!).  Pretzel mummy dogs bake at 450°F for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. I’ve always added the butter and salt before baking, but rumor has it, you can also do this step after they bake.

Finally add tiny dots of mustard for the eyes and serve warm.  I like to dip a toothpick in a dish of mustard and dot the eyes on the hotdog. Sesame seeds would also work for eyes.

Pretzel mummy dogs don’t reheat very well, so make however many you expect to be eaten in one sitting.

Serving with a dipping sauce is another fun way to elevate the meal. Try it with mustard, fry sauce (equal parts ketchup and mayo) and ranch dressing.

We enjoyed our pretzel mummy dogs with with tater tots and carrots and celery for a kid-approved, fun, festive dinner. Happy Halloween!

Servings 8 Pretzel Mummy Dogs

Ingredients

  • 8 ea hot dogs
  • 1 LB pizza dough
  • 10 cups water
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 3 TBS melted butter
  • 2 TBS salt, kosher
  • mustard for eyes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F.

  2. Add 2/3 cup baking soda to 10 cups of water and bring to a boil.

  3. On a lightly floured surface, divide pizza dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long snake, approximately 18-24" in length (you don't have to measure but if you were curious!)

  4. Wrap each hot dog with a dough snake, leaving a little space at the top for the mummy eyes. Ensure the dough is connected on the back of the the dog, otherwise you'll have a random strand of dough floating away from your dog.

  5. Drop dogs 2 at a time into the baking soda bath. Remove after approx. 30 seconds and place on a parchment lined baking sheet.

  6. When all the dogs are out of the bath, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with salt.

  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until pretzels are golden brown.

  8. Use a toothpick to add mustard eyes. Serve warm.

Recipe Notes

Make sure the dough connects to each other, otherwise you'll have dough floating away from your dog.

Sesame seeds could also be used for eyes.

These are fun to dip in various sauces - my taste-testers preferred mustard, fry sauce (equal parts mayo and ketchup) and ranch dressing.
