We planted a salad! Can’t wait till later this summer when we’re able to actually make a salad from our garden!
We started at Home Depot and Lowe’s where we were able to get the majority of our plants. Still missing a snap pea and any type of bean, we headed to our local nursery. We made it a fun family affair on Friday night hoping for less crowds.
Our local nursery, Highlands Garden Center, had a great selection of beans, found our peas and all with very helpful staff. A garden center typically has a bit more knowledgable staff than a big box store. So, if you have questions about which plant would be better for your garden, shop the local nursery.
Wild Cards
I talked about Wild Cards in my previous post and our Wild Cards this year ended up being:
Watermelon – my kiddo REALLY wanted to plant a watermelon. Unfortunately our first plant didn’t transplant well, so we replaced it. I’ve never grown a watermelon, we’ll see how it goes!
Cubanelle Pepper – I bought this on accident thinking it was a green pepper. Gotta check those tags carefully! But thought i’d plant it and learn about a new pepper.
Anaheim Pepper – With the surprise addition of the cubanelle pepper, what’s one more pepper!?!?
Cilantro – we started growing cilantro inside and transplanted it. It didn’t have a chance to harden off before we planted it in the ground so it didn’t make it. We’ve since replaced it and the new plant is doing well.
Rosemary – my aunt gave this to me on Mother’s Day so we stuck that in too! Rosemary is one of my favorite fresh herbs to use when cooking!
Here's What We Planted:
We have 3 garden beds and here’s what we planted:
Garden Bed 1:
- Watermelon
- Romaine Lettuce
- Sugar Snap Peas
- Blue Lake Pole Beans
- Zucchini
Garden Bed 2: Peppers!
- Jalapeno
- Anaheim
- Poblano
- Cubanelle
- Sweet Green
Garden Bed 3:
- Mini Pumpkin
- Rosemary
- Cilantro
- Tomato
- Basil
- Cucumber
We have a trellis in garden bed #1 for the pole beans and sugar snap peas. The beans seem to be cooperating. The peas are acting like a drunk giraffe and flopping all over the place!
We have a tomato cage in garden bed #3 for the tomato. A few decorative spiral-trellises are in the pepper garden, but are more for looks at this point.
Each garden bed has 2 sprinkler heads in them and we run our sprinklers around 3X a week – they go off in the very early morning hours. We also typically give all gardens a good drink with the hose after dinner. If we feel like we’re overwatering, we’ll skip a day or two.
Excited to see which plants produce the most, if the watermelon works and can’t wait to try a cubanelle pepper soon!
